Definition of drug

Drug:

A drug is any substance that acts on the living body to alter the physiological process  and  are used for prevention, diagnosis, control, and treatment of disease. 
              

Drugs

Medicine:

Medicine is the formulated form of drug having definite dose, dosages form, leveling, and packaging.

Official drug:

Any drug which is included in the current issue of a pharmacopeia is an official drug.

Un-official drug:

 A drug which has been recognized in the pharmacopeia but not included in the current issue.

Non-official drug:

 A drug which possesses some medicinal or therapeutic properties but has never appeared in a pharmacopeia or any official publication.

 Crude drugs:

A crude drug is a natural drug of plant, animal or mineral origin.that is collected and drying but not a chemical change.

Control drug :

Some prescription medicines contain drugs that are controlled under the misuse of drug legislation. these medicines are called controlled medicines.

Examples include :Benzodiazepine,Morphine,pethidine,methadone etc.

Over-the Counterdrug(OTC):

Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs are medicines sold directly to a consumer without a prescription from a healthcare professional.

Example:Paracetamol,Quinine,Dextrose,Vitamines.

Essential medicine:

Essential medicine, as defined by the World Health Organization(WHO) are those drugs that satisfy the health care needs of the majority of the population;

they should, therefore, be available at all time in adequate amounts and in appropriate dosage forms, at a price the community can afford.

DGDA(The Directorate General of Drug Administration):

The Directorate General of Drug Administration is the organization entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the quality,efficacy, and safety of pharmaceutical products though the implementation of relevant legislation. The organization is trying its best to fulfill the requirements of the pharmaceutical sector of the country and thereby meeting the needs of the people of the country by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of the medicines.

Tablet :

Tablet may be defined as solid pharmaceutical dosage forms containing drug substances with or without suitable diluents and prepared either by compression or molding methods.

Compressed Tablets:

These tablets are formed by compression and contain no special coating. they are made from powdered, crystalline or granular materials, alone or in combination with binders disintegrates lubricants, diluents and in many cases colorants.

Multiple Compression Tablet:

These tablets are two or three component system; two or three-layer tablets are made by more than one compression cycle to produce a tablet within a tablet or a tablet within a tablet within a tablet.

Repeat Action Tablet:

These are the tablets where different layers are present and the core tablet is usually coated with shellac or an enteric polymer so that it will not release its drug load in the stomach.

Delayed Action and Enteric Coated Tablet:

The delayed action tablet dosage form is intended to release a drug after a sometime delay or after the tablet has passed through one part of the G.I.T. into another 

Suger and Chocolate Coated Table:

Compressed tablets may be coated with colored or uncolored sugar.The coating is water soluble and is quickly dissolved after swallowing.

Film-Coated Tablet:

 These are compressed tablet coated with a thin layer of water-insoluble or water-soluble plasticizer for the polymer and possibly a surfactant to facilitate spreading, film coated  is used for taste masking, to increase, etc.

Chewable Tablets:

Chewable tablet is intended to be chewed in the mouth prior to swallowing and are not intended to be swallowed intact.

Buccal and Sublingual Tablets: 

These tablets are required to be placed below the tongue or in the side of the cheek for the slow release of the medicament.

Effervescent Tablets:

Effervescent tablets are prepared by compressing granular effervescent salts or other materials having the capacity to release gas when in contact with water.

Here the active ingredients are mixed with organic acids, such as citric or tartaric acid and NaHCO3.

Placebo :

A placebo is any component of therapy that is without specific biological activity for the condition being targeted. or

Placebo are inactive substances (have no pharmacological effect) given  to satisfy patient's demand for medicine (mental satisfaction)
